Richard Donner’s 1978 epic about the Man of Steel showed how a film about a superhero could be a moving and romantic experience even for people who long ago gave up comic books. Beginning on the icy planet Krypton, the story follows the baby Kal-El, whose rocket ship lands in Smallville, Kansas. He is found there by a childless couple and raised as the shy Clark Kent (the young Kent is played by Jeff East). The film is perhaps most touching in these sequences, with expanses of wheat fields blowing in the wind and with a young man who can’t figure out what part in destiny his great powers are meant to play. The second half, with Reeve taking over as Clark/Superman, is bustling, enchanting (the scene in which Superman flies girlfriend Lois Lane–played by Margot Kidder–through the night sky is great date material), and funny, thanks largely to Gene Hackman’s sardonic portrayal of nemesis Lex Luthor. –Tom Keogh

Before coming to America to make such acclaimed films as Tender Mercies and Driving Miss Daisy, Australian director Bruce Beresford made a lasting impression with this compelling courtroom drama, considered one the finest films of the Australian new wave of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Based on a true story about three soldiers in the Boer War who are served up as political scapegoats of the British Empire, the film uses a flashback structure to dramatize the courtroom testimony. It begins when the three Australian soldiers are railroaded for the justified killing of a German missionary and placed on trial for court-martial not as a matter of justice, but to mollify the German government for the sake of political expediency. Burdened with a competent but inexperienced and hopelessly disadvantaged lawyer, the soldiers realize that their fate has been sealed and the outcome of their trial is a fait accompli. Charismatic Mark Dacascos is the sensitive fighting machine fresh from prison who pays a visit to former cellmate Jaimz Woolvett, a shaggy drug addict hooked up with a motley gang. Dacascos wants out of the life but grudgingly agrees to tag along for a big score, which erupts into a chaotic double-cross that sends the crew scattered across L.A. and the two buddies out of town where their fragile relationship–based on the vestiges of a prison affair even they dare not discuss–begins to crack under Woolvett’s cold-turkey cravings. The tension builds to a taut, slickly choreographed confrontation at a deserted hotel owned by zoned-out hippie surfer Frederic Forrest when a mob of vengeful drug dealers arrives for their violent revenge. It’s a shame this modest Tarantino-esque grunge noir thriller got lost in the theatrical shuffle, for writer-director Craig Hamann pulls together an engaging cast and gives the picture a solid, stylish look. The film pays off in an impressive climactic slugfest, in which kickboxer Dacascos finally gets to show off his stuff, but it’s Hamann’s sensitivity to character and his thoughtfully developed relationships that provide the solid foundation to this brooding low-budget thriller. –Sean Axmaker

When babies babble or draw, adults jokingly say they know what the baby is trying to communicate. What if a clinic found that these babblings and doodles were actually very intelligent responses or scribbling of an ancient form of communication? Well, it seems that all it would create is this tepid comedy. Kathleen Turner runs the clinic that believes babies have “universal knowledge” before they learn to speak (and dumb down). What she plans to do with this knowledge is never really understood, but know this: the plans are evil. The secret lives of babies have been pretty adorably filmed previously with Look Who’s Talking, but here the babies talk and move via visual effects like the animals in Babe. They also karate chop adults and talk about such adorable things as “diaper gravy.” By the time the story (a variation of The Parent Trap) heats up (relatively speaking), there is not much left to engage us except some cute babies that just look odd as effects take over their mouths and movements. –Doug Thomas

They do so with varying degrees of success, and in ways that are amusing and clever, as are the depictions of the Beatles themselves (the real Fabs appear only in archival footage; in the film, their stand-ins are seen only from the back, from the waist down, and so on). I really enjoyed the performace of Perry Benson and Perry Benson. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Sandy Baron, Perry Benson, Xander Berkeley, Debby Bishop, Rusty Blitz.

Ok, let’s look at Whity.

First, the movie is about Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s seventh feature is a widescreen mix of hothouse southern gothic melodrama and edgy spaghetti western in sunbaked color. Whity (Günther Kaufmann, a longtime Fassbinder regular), the obedient family butler, is the illegitimate mulatto son of sadistic, bullwhip-wielding patriarch Ben Nicholson (American B-movie actor Ron Randell). The ghoulish Nicholson family members include a nymphomaniacal young wife and a brutal, homosexual eldest son (coproducer and future director Ulli Lommell) who abuse yet secretly love Whity, and a developmentally disabled youngest son whom Whity protects from the others like a brother. It’s a grotesque portrait even for Fassbinder, who cakes the Nicholson family faces with gray makeup–they look and at times act like dead-eyed zombies–and sets them plotting against each other. Hannah Schygulla costars as a saloon singer who warbles Kurt Weill-like tunes, and Fassbinder himself plays a gambler who whips Whity for fun. It was Fassbinder’s first feature abroad–he shot it on Sergio Leone’s western sets in Almeria, Spain–and the first of many collaborations with Michael Ballhaus. The behind-the-scenes drama was so eventful that it inspired Beware of a Holy Whore only months later. –Sean Axmaker.
